History of Thompson’s Station, Tennessee

Thompson’s Station was first settled in the late 1700s. It went through several names – first White House, then Littlebury in 1836. It received its final name for an actual station. Dr. Elijah Thompson donated land the for the town and a railroad station in 1855, and his name was given to both the station and the community.

The Battle of Thompson’s Station was fought here on March 5, 1863 during the Civil War. The Third Arkansas Division, fighting for the Confederates lost their color bearer and Colonel during their advance. This caused chaos in the unit, until 17-year-old Alice Thompson came out of her house, grabbed the flag, and led the regiment to victory. The Confederates defeated the Union, losing 300 soldiers to the Union’s 1,906. The newest park in Thompson’s Station – Preservation Park – includes the site of the battle on its 200 acre grounds.

Two homes in Thompson’s Station are on the National Register of Historic Places. The Jacob Critz House, built in 1835, is believed to have been leased by carpet bagger James Wood King after the Civil War. The other is the Thomas L. Critz House, an Italianate style home built in 1887.

Growth and Economy

Thompson’s Station is a small town, but it has almost tripled in size since 2000. The population in that census was 1,283 but is now projected to be over 3,801. This is due partly to the town’s vote to incorporate in 1990.

Pro golfer Tiger Woods and his development company have plans to build a golf course in the area as part of a large $150 million development. The plans include two additional short courses and 800 houses, which would be a significant increase in the Thompson’s Station, TN homes for sale. The development, the Farms at Thompson’s Station, would also include a town center, health and wellness center, and club house.

Business and Shopping

The Thompson’s Station Community Association works with the town to plan events, improve parks, and maintain historic buildings. The town also recently approved a Land Development Ordinance to revise the zoning regulations for this part of the Williamson County real estate market. The new rules will preserve rural land while allowing some mixed use development designed to spur both neighborhood and economic development.
